  • Pump up the volume: The history of House in the UK (143 min)
The ultimate documentary about the birth of housemusic. It tells the story of the social and cultural explosion that was House. From its roots in Chicago, where it rose from the ashes of Disco, House music became the soundtrack to every fashion show, after–show party, premiere, and club opening around the world. Today, House is used by leading mainstream music stars, from Madonna to U2, to break into new markets and to update their sound. In fact, House has influenced more artists than any style since rock ‘n’ roll. This movie follows the story from Chicago and New York to Britain, interviewing key players on both sides of the Atlantic. It also considers the social impact of House—a sound that has transcended class, race, and cultural boundaries to become the soundtrack of modern popular culture.
  • Universal Techno (62 min)
Excerpts from 1996′ French documentary about techno music. This is a supernice documentary on the roots of Detroit-Techno produced by the French / German TV-station arte. From around 1997, I guess. After a rather doubtful start around the Love Parade 1996 (motto: “We Are One Family”, topped in 1997 with “Let The Sunshine In Your Heart”…) it gets really interesting. Fine scenes in Berlin (Mike Banks in the Hardwax store, the Tresor club) followed up by awesome interviews and pictures from Detroit. Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Mark Bell (LFO), etc. Some fine synth-action video snippets from Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream included! A must! God bless arte for this one!
  • Early DJ Culture with Larry Levan (80 min)
